The Geological Society of America Foundation seeks applicants for the position of Chief Development Officer (CDO). The CDO is the principle fund-raiser for the Foundation and reports to the president of the Foundation. The president is the head executive officer of GSAF who reports to an 18 member Board of Trustees. Board officers include a Chair, Vice-chair, and Treasurer and an Executive Committee.

 

The GSAF was founded in 1980 to provide support for programs of the Geological Society of America (GSA), the preeminent professional society supporting the geological sciences. GSA was founded in 1888 and currently has 22,000 members world-wide. (See geosociety.org). The Foundation is an independent 501c3 organization that raises funds and manages endowments in sole support of the GSA. Both organizations are headquartered in Boulder, CO.

 

The CDO serves at the pleasure of the president and the Board of Trustees.

His/her primary responsibilities are:

  • Fund-raising for GSAF and GSA including but not limited to prospect identification, campaign planning, donor communications, special events, and maintenance of donor records.
  • Management oversight of the GSAF Development Committee
  • Stewardship
  • Assisting the President in oversight of the GSAF endowment

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with staff and volunteers on donor relations, stewardship, publications, and development planning and implementation.
  • The CDO shall annually, in collaboration with the President and the Board set and meet annual fund-raising goals and evaluate and revise longer term fund-raising objectives.
  • Assisting the President in fiduciary oversight of all funds managed by GSAF
  • Participate in the GSAF Board and Executive Committee meetings
  • Other activities as requested by the President, Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee

 

The approximate allocation of work effort of the CDO shall be:

  • Fund-raising 80%
  • Stewardship, fund management 15%
  • Administration 5%

 

Ideally applicants will have a science degree and 3-5 years experience in fund raising. The position will remain open until filled. The position will become available on July 1, 2010.
