GEOSTAR Research Grants Fund

GEOSTAR (Supporting The Advancement of Research) is the Foundation’s endowment fund for student research. Many of today’s GSA members received significant financial boosts to their careers from a GSA student research grant. The receipt of a grant can be an important milestone, for the money is paid directly to the researcher. Often, this is the first funding that a scientist receives, and often, this money can make a critical difference on the path to earning an advanced degree. The amount of money annually requested greatly exceeds the amount available, and applications are evaluated on a competitive basis. The review and selection of proposals requires a tremendous amount of dedication time, and is conducted primarily by volunteers. Awards are granted in a variety of major fields, including:

  • Biogeosciences
  • Geochemistry
  • Hydrogeology/Hydrology
  • Mineralogy/Petrology
  • Paleoclimatology
  • Paleoecology
  • Paleontology
  • Quaternary Geology/Geomorphology
  • Stratigraphy/Sedimentology
  • Structural Geology/Tectonics
  • Volcanology
  • Other (Organic Geochemistry, Environmental Science, Geophysics/Tectonophysics, etc.)

The success of the program depends to a large degree on private contributions. The number of applications is increasing every year and we are only able to award grants to less than half of those who apply.
