H. Catherine W. Skinner, PhD

My academic career has an interdisciplinary flavor. I teach and do research/writing in the Departments of Geology and Geophysics, Yale University and Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Yale School of Medicine. My major interests are in biominerals, the materials found in life forms from bacteria to humans, especially bone mineral and biomineralization processes. Recently very active in the formation of the new GSA Division of Geology and Health I am serving as Chair of the National Research Council/ National Academies of Sciences Committee on Research Priorities for Earth Science and Public Health, Board on Earth Sciences and Resources/Board on Health Science Policy. The Report should be out in early 2007.

I am a Fellow of GSA, MSA, SEG, AAAS, and on the Board of GSA Foundation, and the CT Academy of Arts and Sciences. I have been a Visiting Prof at Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, Adelaide University, and in 2005 became the first woman to give the Hallimond lecture at the Mineralogical Society meeting, Bath, England.
